About: The quick sell: daughter of two ""sailors"" raised in the Circle of Dairsmuid. Her earliest memories are of life in the Circle and the Rivaini Seers. Showed early promise and excelled in the use of creation magic, gravitated towards force magic almost as a hobby. She was apprenticed to the Rivaini Seers and given instruction in communing with spirits, but her education was cut short by the Annulment of Dairsmuid. Derrica survived, fled to the sea, and began assisting crews as a healer. Soon picked up a whole other mess of practical abilities (ie how to fight, sail, steal, etc.) while putting her magical abilities to good use. She was sent to check out the Inquisition by her captain, but by the time she got there it's Riftwatch, oops.
Derrica saw the only home she ever knew and the only people who ever cared for her destroyed; the Annulment is a deep wound that never exactly healed right. She carries around guilt for surviving. She carries around anger that it happened and that there was never any kind of satisfactory justice for it. She carries around this terrible loneliness because she misses that life and she can never have it back. The Annulment fundamentally changed her; she'd never believed that the world could hurt her in such a way, or that people could genuinely believe that her people would do them harm.
But in spite of all that, Derrica has a very soft heart. She likes helping people. She likes taking care of folks. Derrica's fairly slow to anger, but when she hits her breaking point, phew. She can be brutal. She defends herself and her allies very intensely. She desperately craves the closeness of family, and strives to make herself useful because she worries that her acceptance (especially after what she saw at Dairsmuid) is conditional on her being the type of mage that's handy to have around and protected.
She teeters between seeking close connections with people and forcibly holding herself at arm's length. She prefers to be dictating the terms in which people come to matter deeply to her (not always very successfully, because again: soft heart) because she's always prepared to 1. be shown the door or 2. have to scuttle out the door herself at the first hint of danger. Being so forcibly ousted from her community shocked her into drawing into herself, so she's a lot quieter and a lot slower to trust as a result.
A fairly effective healer, magically and otherwise, enthusiastic sailor and passable brawler, Derrica's great to have around in a pinch.
